London has long been a source of inspiration for many of the people who have lived in or visited the city. In February half term, young people from Newham, Greenwich, Lewisham and Tower Hamlets drew on the creative spirit of the city and the collections of the Museum of London Docklands  for a film project inspired by London inventions.

Working together, the participants created short films about future creations which could continue to transform Londoner’s lives. To learn more , the young people explored the museum’s collection to understand how inventions have improved the lives of Londoners over time. They then used this knowledge to create storyboards and scripts for their films. The group learned various film making techniques, including stop motion animation and green screen technology, taught by a filmmaker at Chocolate Films and combined these skills with acting, prop making and sound recording, all of which were included in the production of the final two short films.

At the end of the week long project, participants shared some of their thoughts on what they had learned and as well as their favourite aspects of the week. One young person said  ‘all you need is an amazing and engaging voice’ to tell stories while another participant shared that their favourite part of the week was ‘looking around the museum {to} see different works…and {learning} how to tell their stories’.

The short films created by the young people can be seen this weekend, 5 and 6 March, at the Designing London: Inventions that shaped our city festival at the Museum of London Docklands. As a part of this family friendly weekend, you will be able to explore everyday inventions, learn what goes on behind the scenes at the museum and become inventors of the future through a range of different activities. You will also have the opportunity to meet some of our young filmmakers as well as listen to their insights into this process. Perhaps you will even be inspired to create inventions of your very own.

Can’t make it to the museum this weekend? You will still have the opportunity to get inventive and take part in family friendly fun at the museum over the Easter break from the 26 March to 9 April. Find out more about what is going on at the Museum of London, Docklands this Easter.
